Two Greatest Commandments

Matthew 22:37-40

37Jesus replied: ” ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Mark 12:29

29″The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

Luke 10:27

27He answered: ” ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ ” 28″You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”

When we Love God with all our heart, soul, strength and mind we are honoring and obeying the first four commands of the Ten Commandments.

  1. I am the Lord your God, You shall have no other gods before me.
  2. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God,
  3. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. The Lord Jesus is the Sabbath rest, He is the Lord of the Sabbath. Matthew 12:8, Mark 2:28, Luke 6:5, Hebrews 4:7-5:11

When we love our neighbor as ourselves, we are honoring and obeying the last six commands of the Ten Commandments.

  1. Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
  2. You shall not murder.
  3. You shall not commit adultery.
  4. You shall not steal.
  5. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
  6. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Love does no harm to its neighbor. Romans 13:10, Galatians 5:14, James 2:8
